Life of a Gardener
About
In the modern world we are increasingly surrounded by man made materials and mass produced items have flooded the market. The majority of things that now surround us have ended up making our homes generic and less interesting. From small crafted items to bespoke joinery, and everything in between, there are few things that can't be achieved with wood.

Williams & Welsh was born to go against the grain. Its purpose is to create and materialise gardens that are uniquely sentimental to the customer. There is room for amazing and wonderful elements in any budget or project, you just have to dare to believe and commit! My Commitment to this ethos traverses through all aspects of the company, although, it resides and emanates at its core.

For me, every project starts as an adventure into the unknown but always ends with an enjoyable journey to look back on. Much like life. With all of my projects they are very much the same. They meet new people, find different homes and rest in weird and wonderful places. All with its very own story to tell.

George Clarkes Amazing Spaces, Kevin McCloud and Grand Designs, Monty Dons Gardeners' World. I'm sure we've all been in the same situation, watching these inspirational programs. We drift off into our creative daydreams, full of grand ideas and end results. Then, as often the case, the inspiration bubble is burst by those pesky realities of life. Money, time, other priorities on the forever growing to do list. As the old english proverb states, you cannot have your cake and eat it...apparently!

Luckily, I look to be the exception. I believe there's always a solution to a problem and quite often the solution can be fun! There may always be compromise but rarely should there be sacrifice. I believe this is down to the problem solver, their scope for creativity and the driving motivation behind them. Money cannot override purpose otherwise the final product will show it.

Coming from a lineage of gardeners, woodworkers and artists, creative expression is very much in my bones. However, being lucky enough to live and work around the world, I now also pull my influences and inspirations from far and wide. Many of which I try to incorporate into my work.

Which brings me to "Joga Bonito". A school boy nickname that stuck and, strangely, ended up being an affirmation that I try to remind myself as often as possible. Translated from Brazilian Portuguese, it means "play beautifully" and when applied to the everyday, its meaning becomes infinite. Boiled down though, it's about being passionate in the things we do. And I've got bags of that!

Aime Onario Frasier concludes so wonderfully with words..."Woodworking matters. It's more than a past time or a hobby - being a woodworker means that you know the satisfaction and pride that comes from using your hands and mind to build beautiful, functional objects, and that you're as interested in the process as the outcome. Amid the speed and chaos of the modern world, woodworking gives us a place where we can slow down, pay attention and take the time to do things right".

Gardening is my religion. The Garden is my sanctuary.
